Shockingly, one in two of us will face cancer. Homepride’s support and the money you raise at your Coffee Morning will help Macmillan be there for people facing cancer by funding Macmillan nurses like Hollie, a Macmillan Head and Neck Clinical Nurse Specialist.

Hollie supports patients and their families diagnosed with Head and Neck Cancer (including thyroid cancer), from the time of diagnosis, during and post cancer treatment and is a point of contact for both patients and their family with regards to symptom management, psychological support and problem solving and she puts the patient at the heart of all she does.

“I’m a keen person when it comes to ensuring that patients wishes are achieved- I very much enjoy getting involved in organizing family experiences to make ‘family memories’, whether that be days out, weddings, holidays or bucket list requests. We only get one chance in life, so go out and do all the things that you want to achieve and never regret not doing them. A cancer diagnosis can very much consume life for that patient and their family, I like to remind them ‘who they are’ and help them live well.”

Hollie loves “Knowing that I do a role that I love and meeting some very fabulous and brave individuals along the way. My patients surprise me on a daily basis with their resilience and I have the utmost admiration for them.”

JOINTHE CELEBRATION OF 60 YEARS SINCE THE BIRTH OF FRED

Fred, Homepride’s bowler-hat-wearing Chief Flour Grader, is turning sixty. He is loved by generations of bakers and will be celebrated with a range of fun activities that will draw on the nostalgia of this iconic character. He will also be making the odd appearance himself!

We’re delighted to share our celebrations with the artist Mark Mason who has fond memories of playing with a plastic Fred figure when he was a child – almost like a giant Lego® man. It was only a matter of time before he put his love of art and Fred together.

Mark refers to his paintings as ‘retro surrealism’: sometimes surreal but always telling a story. They are fun, different and - you could say - quirky! He has a number of characters who appear in his paintings including Ole Salty, the sou’wester wearing seagull, a magpie who is a pirate, Harold, a bowler-hatted 1960’s styled Pigeon and, of course, our very own Fred.

Mark’s love of Homepride Fred and the Belgian surrealist artist Rene Magritte (who painted many bowler-hat-wearing business suited men) inspired him to bring the two together and create Magritte styled paintings and pastiche compositions for all to enjoy.
